Until you notice the missing lever cap screw.
The broken frog makes the plane unusable. Being an old #5-1/2, it is an odd size frog.

The repainted bed and sides certainly doesn't help the value, either, though that would not matter to a user.

I have an old 5 1/2 user that's not broken. Maybe I will paint it. I sure like the looks of it. I replaced a broken tote with a new rose wood tote.

Not only does a freshly painted plane look nice, it feels a little better against the hands in use.
For a "collector" it can ruin a piece. For someone who wants a display it can enhance the value. Hard to figure these things sometimes.

Take all the guts out and make a wood stuffed plane like the one Derek made. No frog needed. save the rest for parts.

A few of my personal users are repainted. Typically if you are considering repainting a plane, the japanning must look pretty bad, so it's a safe bet that it won't be a collectors first pick anyway. Just don't go sandblasting your gunmetal miller's patent plow plane and you should be alright!
