Robert, Curt Fuller has done several pieces with cottonwood. Here are a few of the links I found -

Have turned a bit of cottonwood. It does turn fairly nice, but as always use sharp sharp tools. The few bits I turned, mostly scraps stuff when learning to turn, was very soft.

Cottonwood makes exceptional bowls! It dries well, turns easy, and sands like a dream. You need very sharp tools, a little higher speed, and a fairly light touch, to get smooth cuts. When the bowls are finished, they are very light weight, and will make wonderful family heirlooms. Women love them!
Being soft wood, several wet, penetrating coats of thinned danish oil or tung oil will help stabilize the wood enough so that it won't scar too easily, if it's used as a utility bowl.
Besides all this, most of it is pretty.

It can beautiful wood. I believe Mike Mahoney calls it "Mormon Poplar". The symposium I attended a few eeks ago he turned a platter out of it that was very nice.

I have a bunch of it and love to turn it! It will spalt nicely and can have some wonderful curl and figure in it. Get all you can get, free is the best wood no matter the species.
