They grow on steel trees. You have to pick them at the right time or they'll be the wrong size. Also, make sure it's the right kind of tree. I wanted stainless, but ended up with the wrong size galvanized.

I have a source (the goode olde place) in this small town, where I can buy 1x8 nuts; I've bought a few of them, and right now, I can't remember what they cost; I know they were reasonable.
Don't know what the postage would be to Indiana. If you like, I can check it out tomorrow morning, and let you know. How many?

Jack, 1" 8tpi is a standard unified national coarse thread size. You should be able to find them at any heavy truck or heavy equipment dealer or your local Fastenal store. Good Luck...

I was buying the 1 x 8 lock nuts to make waste blocks out of for my boxes (Bonnie Klein style) on my mini lathe. At the local Ace, they were $35 for a box of 10. At the local fastener store, they were about $25. With the locking nuts with the nylon insert, it is deep enough so that you don't need a spacer between the nut and the headstock. Turn out the nylon (need a 1/4 inch spacer to thread it onto your lathe, and a square end scraper), or heat it out. I also true up the face with a Thompson scraper. Drill out a pine waste block, stuff the nut in, use some of the 2 part epoxy, mix it in a syringe (they have some thing perfect in the wall paper part of the big box store for glue), squirt it in the edges, let dry over night. Round it up and flatten the top and go.

If you do have to order them, McMaster is very good. They have warehouses scattered around. I get one day shipping via ground and the rates are very reasonable compared to some suppliers.

Tractor supply sells them by the pound.

You should try to find some in bulk like at Tractor Supply or other farm related store. I bought 2 each 1" and 3/4" (4 total nuts) for $1.34 yesterday since they were sold in bulk for $1.79/pound. Bulk is the way to go for standard capscrews, carriage bolts, lag screws, nuts, washers, and lock washers. They normally are stocked from 1/4" up to 1" for bolts. Lag screws and something else were more per pound, but still about half price of buying in plastic or each at the box stores.

Guess I will run down to Tractor Supply. We have one about 5 miles down the road. Thanks again.
