Hi All, Where do you get your dried wood for things like pepper mills and other projects where green wood wouldn't work? Thanks!

Alan,

I would give Mike Smith a call. He is in North Carolina, very knowledgeable, excellent turning stock, wide variety, great pricing. His cell number is 252-230-3109, website is www.easternncwoodworkers.com

Alan,

I think Mike is in Bailey NC not to far from you, about an hour and a half north of me here in Hubert NC.

Alan, I don't know if it'll help you or not, but I cure and kiln dry my own. I've been doing that for about the past 5 years now, and have finally got some decent pieces to turn. I use old refrigerators as kilns.

Many lumberyards will have kiln-dried 12/4 lumber that can be ripped into blanks to use for pepper mills, boxes, and other small items that have close tolerances for fit. These are normally the more common furniture woods such as walnut, oak, maple, and cherry, but those can be good choices for turning.

I get all my dried wood from Bell Forest Products. They have some amazing wood - plus run specials from time to time, like free shipping.

You might try Wall Lumber (www.walllumber.com (http://www.walllumber.com)). Not too far from Raleigh.
