Tabua (whale teeth) are very special ceremonial items in Fiji. (They also are VERY expensive.) No chance to 2nd guess settings and a bit of nail chewing later, the chief who asked me to engrave it was very happy. :) Definitely the most unique job of the week!

Haha...a whale's tooth?!?!?

You never know what's next.

Good job..especially on something that was a '1st shot's your best shot'' job.

Here, take this towel to wipe off all that sweat.....:o

I'm still wondering how he got the whale to sit in the dentist's chair..

Talk about a nail-biter, John - but all your experience with natural materials paid off! That looks like an OLD tooth...

You definitely get the prize for most interesting substrate this week! And nerve!

cheers, dee

Any chance that the tooth smelled like antler~stinky? Absolutely! Burning hair - but worse. Even with my super exhaust (good for rubber stamps), the guy remarked on how bad it smelled.

Chuck,

I was wondering how big that Tooth Fairy must be to haul off such large booty!

Last year my mom went to Alaska and brought back Ulu knives for me and my brother. Apparently, the high end knives have handles made of walrus penis. Now THAT would be an interesting substrate.

Nice job John. I would have thought it was good because a lot of work was done in the old days, scrimshaw work, using the laser is just a better carving tool.
