Hello fellow turners.
I am interested in getting a moisture meter such as a Lignomat. I am hesitating because none of the pinless meters on the market appear to measure deep enough through the wood to help with turning blanks. Should a meter with pins be used? Has anyone had good luck with meters? I should add, my interest is based on knowing if my green would is ready for turning without going through the DNA process.
Any advise welcome.
Michael

I use a moisture meter and have found that, though the pins do not penetrate deeply, they certainly offer a good indication of how wet the wood still is. I don't think it really matters how you dry the wood before final turning, but whatever technique you use, the meter gives you a good indication.
Regards, Hilel.

I have been using a Wagner pinless for a couple years now, and it works rather well. It reads at least 1/2" into the would, which is enough for most bowls. I would imagine the Ligno would be similar. The accuracy of the precise MC reading isn't so critical, but rather tracking the moisture loss.
