RiverBirch Root HF

[Bill Bolen]

Small HF from a huge root that took me a week to hand dig out from in front of the house. Figured after that much work I BETTER get something out of it. There was a lot of color showing on what I chose to be the top with nothing but yellow wood on the side chosen to be the bottom. Well sure, as soon as I had the outside done all kinds of color and a nice little void was now showing on the bottom. Guess that root had the last laugh! 4 X 7 and finished with water base poly and buffed...Bill...

I'd say you got the best of the wood, Bill. That is a really nice form, and some beautiful wood. And some beautiful turnings are meant to be picked up, handled and turned over. ;)

OK,newby question here.Do you dry a piece like that then turn it to a finished product or how is it done? The reason I ask is that I have some spalted maple like that and it is anchorsealed right now but I would love to turn it. I'm afraid it will crack badly after a day or two.

Donny if it were a bowl or a lidded box I would rough turn and bag it for a few months then finish turn. For me a HF is a bit different. Once the round is cut I seal the end grain and sit on a shelf for 6 or more months then turn to completion. I'm sure I have a bit of wood movement this way but I generally like the results from the shifting wood...Bill..
