Having completed two prototypes, I've begun the production run. I am building 7 more (I gave the first prototype away) to make a set of 8. So far it's going well, with many lessons learned from the prototypes.

Looking forward to the progress of the chairs Hans.
Looks like you are off to a great start....
What style are they going to be?

I posted the prototype under "Cherry dining Chair" - can't seem to figure out how to copy the link...

A proto-type is a must Hans. You should have relatively easy sailing after the bugs were worked out with the proto-type...

Have fun.. maintain patience!

Thanks for the thread name Hans.
When you are done that is going to be one fine dining room suite.

It's a lengthy process; I just finished a 10 chair set. Like you, I made a prototype; then did the other 9 in a process run. Good luck and hang in there!!

Did you keep track of hours spent? I have 23 hours in to this point, and I expect by the time I'm ready to apply finish, I'll be up to about 100-120 hours. I am thinking of having them spray lacquered instead of attempting padded shellac by hand. I'm not sure my elbows have that much grease in them!

Spent about 10 hours fitting the crest rail mortices and the back splats. Most challenging was fitting the back pieces, to ensure no gaps between the back piece and the crest rail. To do this it's sometimes necessary to nip just a hair off the tops of the legs, so I decided to complete the fitting of the back prior to shaping the legs to make adjustments easier. Here are a couple of pictures of this process.

I really like those, very elegant and you can change the whole tone of the piece with the seat covering.

Haven't had much time to work on the chairs lately, but here's where I am. I am hoping to put in a solid weekend after which I should be able to start finishing. There is still quite a bit of final shaping and sanding to do, but it's coming!

I was hoping to get more done this weekend but that big bright thing in the sky came out and I had to come out of my cave. Here is the finished product from the weekend...

There were some minor byproducts. The back splats and crest rails are now ready for final sanding and finishing.

Holy spoke shave! Good thing I'm just doing this for fun. If I were trying to make money I'd be broke. I suppose I'd more likely be using newfangled gadgets like belt sanders and the like. Anyway, I've got 55 hours in so far and I figure another 10 hours and I'll be ready for finish.

Nice work Hans - I am in the same boat - a set of 8 for now. Very time consuming. Prototype is critical and full size templates.

I will be starting a thread shortly. Nice work, again!

Looking great Hans... Yep.. the finishing IMO is a killer and the reason I have determined I likely would not make another set. I hate the nooks and crannies as I don't have spray equipment. I think it is an excellent idea to let someone who does do the finish. The chairs took me much less time than the finish and frankly.. I got kind of burned out doing that dreaded part for me.

Finished assembling my chairs today. Here they are with just some oil. I will do one coat of shellac then have them spray lacquered. Now for the seats....
