We just got ahold of some rather large hunks of wood, but don't know what kind of wood it is, any guess by the pictures?

The first photo looks like cherry the second looks like either soft maple or poplar.

1) Maple that sat a while before being cut (hence not white)
2) Poplar

Picture #1 could even be beechwood that has discolorations. I have some like it. The picture isn't close up enough to really tell. Beech has lots of little brown marks in it.

If it's a pallet from north America I'm going to go with George and say it's either maple or beach.

It appears to be soft Maple.(Red,Swamp, or Silver Maple)

1. Maple
2. If it was poplar the color would be reversed with the light colored part being the sapwood and the darker being the heartwood. I'll go with ash.

Is this the most appropriate forum to post these kinds of things in?

This has nothing to do with the OP. I ask because I have several hunks of wood I cannot identify.

We have had pallets with pecan that looks similar to the first picture. Pallet wood can be anything available. I think this is a perfect opportunity to invest in a wood identification book or two!

There was another thread recently: http://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?p=1326695#poststop

where the original poster was wanting to identify wood. Some one suggested this site and I used end-grain pictures to make the match. This is the most completely pictorial wood library I've found to date.

In the second photo, the board on the left side of the frame looks like poplar but the other one looks like soft maple. Most of the time pallet lumber is cut from several different species of trees and the guy building them just picks up whatever is there to build the pallet. Not unusual to have different wood in the same pallet.

+1 - I agree with Kevin here.

1 = Maple
2 = Ash maybe. This is not poplar.
