I saw some aspen recently that seemed to be almost void of figure and snow white in color. I wonder if this would be a good choice for and inlay in a cherry coffee table? I know holly is used for string inlay and wonder if this would be suitable.

Your thoughts are appreciated. Ken

Aspen is pretty soft compared to holly, and might be damaged more easily.

I used some to make the top of my media cabinet and it dents rather easily. :(

I used alder extensively when I lived in Seattle in the 80's. I don't think I'd use it for inlay given the issue mentioned above (soft, dents). I used it for the same purposes I use poplar now, as a cheap secondary wood. I can't ever remember seeing pure white alder. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I'll scrap that plan....

I attended an inlay class at Homestead Heritage recently.

Aspen was used for stringing. It is soft.

The star inlay was made with cherry and maple inlayed into walnut.
