I was given a bunch of veneer recently and have been trying to ID the wood. These two I'm a little questionable on. I think the one on the bottom is Brazilian Rosewood and the one on the top might be goncalo alves. What do you think?? The veneer is from the 60's if that helps...

The bottom one looks more like East Indian rosewood. I've used a lot of rosewood over many years as a guitar maker. I'll leave the other wood to someone else.

What ever it is it is gorgeous. It was just given to you? Am I sensing a stealth gloat?

You must have missed my gloat! :D http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=131117

I have so much great veneer now, just lacking the experience to use it  There is a lot of flat sawn cherry and walnut, so I can practice on that to start.

Your right I did miss that one. Still the word "gloat" is not in the title and since I don't do veneering, I never opened it up. Beautiful stuff. Someday when I can use my tools for some fine work, rather than making me money I will have to work with some finer materials.

I agree that the rosewood looks more like East Indian than Brazilian. Guitar player here.
