This Natural Edge Vase / Hollow Form is a piece of Big Leaf Maple Burl that I have been studying twice a month for over a year. I finally decided to give it a go and see if I could keep it from flying apart. It is full of cracks, checks and bark inclusions but I was able to keep it together.
The size is 6" tall and 4" in diameter, with a base that is just over 1" The finish is just sanded to 400 with a coat of walnut oil.
C&C is welcome.

It looks really nice, you did a good job with both the planning and execution.

Wow... what a beautiful piece of wood! I love the form. It looks much larger to me than what you describe.
Just beautiful.

Really nice-it does look like it would be tough to keep together. Well done.

Wow, that's one rugged looking vase. I like all the cracks, inclusions, and especially the weathered color. That's really nice.

That looks really good. I'm surprised you were able to keep it together. It looks like it's just held together in a couple of spots.
Very well done...

If it was me, I would have had to start looking for the pieces about the time I started with the 400 grit. These things never seem to blow up right as you start them, only as you finish them. :D
You did a great with what the wood gave you. I am glad that you gave the dimensions. It looks much bigger in the photo than you said it actually is. Overall, a very nice piece.

Dale, that's a really nice piece. I hope it stays together long term - gives me confidence to try some questionable blanks I have on hand.

Dale,
That looks like it was a real challenge. Very well done to keep it together and maintain good form. N.E. without inclusion is sometimes a challenge. Your form is very good and the wood is super looking. Great work.

I really like that. I call those 'gutsy' turnings. Looks like that could have blown on you at any time. Seems like you predetermined your cuts ahead of time. Pretty piece.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words about this piece. Slow and easy with light cuts while hollowing was the only way to go. The use of a 4 wheel steady rest and some masking tape was what really saved this thing.
