titanium ring engraving

Hello,

I'v got a customer that would like me to laser on a Titanium Ring that he
made... would I use Cermark just as if I was lasering on Stainless?
I usually use 600dpi 10-15s 100p...does this sound like it would work?

Titanium engraves better than stainless. It's the ability of the material to transfer heat that makes all the difference. The easier the material transfers heat, the harder it is to Cermark.

any suggestions on how to set the ring on a jig for the rotary to laser around it???
having trouble finding something heavy enough.

I imagine a properly sized dowel with some putty stuck to it would work as a great jig.

Someone brought me in a titanium ring the other day, but it had a shiny black coating, so cermark was out.. The laser would not even touch it... 100%p 2% speed..Well, there was a 'hint' of a mark, but buffing it with my thumb removed it.. I've marked lots of titanium, hammers etc.. But this black coating was probably a powder coat of some kind, and laser proof...

I've had a tough time with black oxide coatings.

Sounds like it was a zirconium ring. Sometimes titanium is added to be able to call it black titanium, but it's the zirconium that turns black. It takes a lot of power to get through the zircon surface, which has a Mohs hardness of 8.4. On my 130 watt laser, I go about 85% power and 100% speed. Doing more heat will turn the zirconium black again.
