Hey Guys,

Thinking about buying the G4227 sliding table. I would like to have a bigger one but cost is a factor here. Excaliber is out of my range.

Does anyone have the 4227? Comments?

Thanks,

Terry

OR...How about the Rockler sliding table? It looks interesting also and is in my price range.

Thanks,
Terry

I took a look at it last time I went in to get some router bits. Depends what you want to use it for, I'd say. It might work OK for light duty use, but I wouldn't use it in a production setting. I got the impression that it would need to be checked for accuracy every time you changed setups. The top was essentially melamine, so figure on replacing it from time to time. Not sure how sawdust would effect the bearings... I couln't bring myself to buy one, even though I could use a compact slider for my shop.

Left Tilt or Right Tilt???

Now your sayin' to yourself: "That boy is crazy." Well, yes & well...no. When I was looking at these 1023 saws at Springfield I was told the sliding table only fits the right tilt. Has to do with which side the dust port is on. The angled support thingy fits into the cabinet right where the port is on the leftie.

Of course, you can re-engineer it with a floor support, I recon...

From their website:
"Fits our G1023 Series Table Saws (except G1023SL), G1035 Shaper, G1026 Shaper, and most other cabinet saws and full size shapers. Weight is 85 lbs. (Some alterations may be required for installation.)"

The Grizzly slider is $324 (incl shipping) The Excalibur is $499 at Amazon (free shipping) Bobby Hatfield has the Excalibur. Perhaps he could add to this discussion. I know he intends to re-engineer his.

Zack,

I know about the right/left deal. I have the 1023S regular old right tilt so no problem there. I believe it's the motor that would be in the way on the left tilt. The dust port is on the left on the right tilt anyway. It is in the cleanout door. I'm going to Springfield soon anyway so I would have to pay sales tax on the Griz but would not have to pay shipping.

A couple of things concern me about the Excaliber.

First the price. I really want/need to stay in the $300 range.

Second would be the size of the thing. I ain't going to move my saw and have to redo my DC ducts....again. The Excaliber will not fit where my saw is now. The Grizzly or Rockler will.

Thanks,

Terry

There you go again Terry ---- showing a piece of equipment in an 'operating room' instead of a woodworking shop ---- Way too clean. (T.H. = neat freak)<IMG src="http://www.klsal.com/smiley2.gif">

Hey Terry,

After seeing the picture of your Grizzly TS, I knew we have or actually had the same TS in our shop. We used the Grizzly sliding table with it and all I can say is we had trouble keeping the thing lined up, the table would never stay level. Setting the miter fence wasn't easy either and keeping it set. We now have a new TS and I'm back to using a cross cut sled.

That was about 4 years ago We had it about 7 years, I don't know... maybe grizzly have improved them since.

One is a good friend of mine. He wouldn't be without it. The other is an older fella that has not used it much. One downfall they say it has is you have to cut the fence tubes off to be able to use the fence. If you took the slider off, then the tubes are too short to make cuts left of the blade. So------------ Maybe two table saws? More tools, more tools. I really like my 1023, [no slider]. Am in the process of adding the 6' tubes today so I can rip more than 26" in width. Steve:rolleyes:

Terry, I just pulled out my Grizzly catalog and looked at the slider you're considering. Although it obviously will not have the capacity of the larger Excalibur unit, the price is such that it isn't much more than a premium miter guage solution! It looks like a winner in that respect, IMHO. If it were usable on my saw (it isn't) I'd consider it in a flash.

BTW, it's interesting that your dust post is on the left on your RT saw...my Jet LT saw has the dust port in that position, too!

I think Terry needs to come up and clean my shop beings the only thing he is doing is looking at sliders. That would keep him busy for quite some time.

Steve...

I din't use the Shop Fox fence. I already had an Align a Rip fence and I transfered that off my old CS when I bought the 1023s. I wasn't going to cut the rails just slide them to the right. The Align a Rip has t slots on the fence rails so this would be really easy.

As far as cleaning your shop...your are on your own!!!:D

Jim Becker...

That's what I thought!! I could not buy a good miter gauge for much less than either of these tables. Decisions...decisions...

Jim Baker...

My shop wasn't that clean before I moved into it either , but it is now. I'm just a clean freak when it comes to the shop. I have a big compressor and the shop has 2 walk doors, 3 overhead doors and 2 windows. I just open everything up and start blowing!!!:) I have nearly busted my a%& a couple of times on the concrete floor when it's got saw dust on it so I really do have a "real" reason for keeping it clean.

Thanks,

Terry

A-OK on the not having to cut the tubes, but-------------------can't understand why you won't come up and clean my shop!!!!!! I could work while you do this task, and may even--------slide you one for doing it. But you would be on your own drinking it as I gave it up long ago.

Maybe Terry keeps posting these pictures of his clean shop to get us to buy his cyclone???

That grizzly slider is the same as the delta unit. It is basically a good unit but expect that the table board to be a bit bowed. Other than that it has a lot of potential and a great deal of usefulness. The rockler table is really the Mule and is not in the same league as the grizzly or any other slider for that matter.

I have a lot more slider info on my site if you are up for a read.

Phil,

I searched on WoodNet and found all of your stuff on the Delta when I began thinking about this purchase. Absoulutely GREAT site by the way!!!! I have referenced it several times in the past. Thanks for a very helpful site with a ton of good information. I saw John Lucas had a very favorable review of the Rockler on his site as well. That's when I decided to post the question.

I too think the Griz has a lot of potential and will probably but it and perform your modifications and see what happens and how I like it. It looks much beefier than the Rockler.

Thanks again,
Terry

Naa. He's just like me...anal as all heck when it comes to cleaning up after and during a project. Once you get into the habit, you find it's much easier to move around and the cleanup job is only a series of small end-of-day details rather than a major "lose the weekend" type job. A clean shop is a safer shop, too.

I really think He must have a couple of maids come in TWICE a day to help him clean. No way he can possibly keep it that clean and get anything else done.:D

Steve,

I budget a little bit of time each day to clean up. I actually only takes a few minutes since I honestly just blow everything out once the big stuff is in the trash can and the tools are put away. I perfer to go into a clean shop the next working day. I fell like my work turns out better and I sure am more efficient because I don't have to hunt for tools.....really!!!

That happens to be the one that I have and I haven't had any problems with it in the six years I have used it. It has not sagged, not gone out of alignment and the fence ought to be checked on any slider prior to use when it can be taken off. In fact I put a thumbscrew in the stop so I can store the table out of the way when I am not using it. I found myself in the predicament of needing a decent crosscut in a minimum amount of space and this one has done just fine. I regularly cross cut sheet stock up with it and do not have an issue I can gripe about. Joe

I'm going to head up to Springfield as soon as I can and get one. Glad it works for you and hopefully it will for me as well.

Thanks again,

Well, looks like I am going to have to give up on you cleaning up my shop. Hope you decide which slider you want and hope it works out ok. I visit that Grizzly bunch and also Ballews there in Springfield a couple of times a year. Next time I ease across the line into Ark. I'll see if I have time to slide into Springdale, and see that surgery room you have. Cheers, Steve:D
