I received an email ad for a sale of cherry @ $3.00/bd ft. I think that is a pretty decent price. What do others think?

That looks like a great price for Cincinnati area. However it depends on the color and grade of the wood.

A local supplier that sells finished dimensioned (S4S) cherry lumber, kiln dried, knot and defect free, no sap wood. Their wood sells from $6.57 to 10.90 per board foot, depending upon dimensioned width and length you purchase. There is no extra charge for curly pieces.

Reasonable price for #1 common, rough, KD. Good price for FAS rough KD. I probably wouldn't pay much more than that for cherry.

I'd probably pay that if it is all faced/dried and looks good.

Geez Lee, that's sounds a bit steep. Especially when you're right in the middle of all the good PA cherry! Here in CNY, I can get nice stock @ around $3.50-$5.25/bf. Curly and other figured stock goes for a little more. Of course, there is always the stealth gloat...I did get about 150bf last summer for $1/bf FAS.

Cherry in NW PA is hard to come by as we are at the western edge of the forests and most is being bought by the major cabinet companies since Cherry is the popular wood right now. You can buy rough cherry lumber for less, but then you get mill run quality too and may have to dry it. This particular dealer sells S4S dimensioned lumber so no mill work or drying is required. You also get 100% usable wood. I've purchased one piece of reaction wood from this guy in 20 years. I also get to pick through his stacks for pieces I want and curly material is the same price.

West Penn Hardwoods has 4/4 cherry for $3.50 incl. shipping (200 bd ft minimum). I always figure approx. $1.00 bd ft for shipping which makes it around $2.50.
Great people to do business with. No affiliation, just a satisfied cutomer. John

I just looked at their site and 4/4 cherry (http://www.westpennhardwoods.com/shop/catalog/Cherry.html) is $7.00 per bdft. Where did you find $3.50?

I saw the same on from Rockler in the D/FW area. I'm out of town this weekend, so if there's any left Monday, I'll probably pick some up.

Lee,
Click on the closeouts button and then the lumber tab in the next window.

I bought a couple hundren board feet of curly maple a couple of years ago from them in the closeout section and the stuff was really nice. Good figure and some pretty wide boards.

SF Bay Area pricing (MacBeath Hardwood): $2.97 for 4/4 common; $5.67 for 4/4 sel & better; $8.55 for 4/4 sel & better figured. They don't list FAS in their price sheet.

Now I wonder how big macbeath is? I have a Macbeath is SLC, UT. Until now I thought it was the only one.

Could someone please explain FAS #1COM #2COM and there are others that I can't remember. Nevermind found this http://members.cox.net/messman123/Wood%20Ratings.htm

We paid $3.50 I believe for rough sawn stock from a small mill in southwest Michigan last summer. It wasn't graded but I'd guess it was something akin to #1 common.

If its rockler, its already been dimensioned to thickness which I wouldnt like unless you were building right away. If not more chances of it moving with no wiggle room to reflatten.

If its Rockler, it would be dimensioned usually on 3 sides...But for $3/bf. Build it now....:)

I just found an unlimited continuous buy on clear cherry for $1.50 a bd/ft. But unfortunatly I cannot share the source. It is surfaced 2 sides but no straight edge. I am estatic, that is cheaper than I can buy red oak.
