I have made this bowl to donate for the school silent auction next month. It is maple, 2 1/8" x 9 3/8", finished with three coats of tung oil. I plan to buff it out after the oil has cured for a week or so. Since all of my turnings to date have been given to family and close friends, this is my first "public" piece. I hope that it brings big bucks for the kids!

As always, your honest feedback is encouraged and accepted.

Beautiful bit of curl in that piece. Lovely simple shape. Good for you for donating it... Gives turners a good name.

John, that's a really nice bowl. May I suggest something that might help you out a lot?
Print out a short blurb... just a paragraph... and ask that the auctioneer read it at the auction. Something like Mike Mahoney prints out to accompany all his bowls....
" This bowl may be used for Salad, Popcorn, or Gravy. It will become a family heirloom. Please don't soak in water or place in dishwasher. Wash by hand and dry. An occasional wipe with walnut or mineral oil will keep it nice for years. -- John Altberg

At the auction last night, the bowl went for $45 as well as a pepper mill at the same price. It was a fun night and several of my new "business" cards went home in people's pockets. Perhaps there will be some commissions in my future! It would be nice to make a few bucks to cover consumables in the shop.

Nice job. $45 is a bargain for that piece, but hopefully it will pay dividends in the future.
