I was just in the local hardwood supplies store and they have a large board of what the guy told me was Ednam. I've never heard of it, and looking on the web doesn't seem to show anything useful either. It's dark brown with a very tight curly dark to black grain pattern, very intricate grain that I've never seen before. Any clues about this stuff?

Maybe Lignum Vitae??

No, I have some lignum at home, this is darker, dry and really finely figured. I wouldn't normally think twice about it but it's a big board and I only have use for about 1/6 of it. He wants to sell the board as-is for $120. A decent price considering it's look and size. I would love to know more about it though.

It is a sub species of african mahogany. Good stuff - a bit darker, denser and more stable than khaya, not as red as sapele. I think I'm paying around $4 - $4.5 per BF for 4/4.

Ah, cool. Thanks for that.

The stuff does look really nice as it's curly and coiled like crazy. I can only imagine how it would look with a bit of oil in it. Quite spectacular I would think, and the whole board is pretty much like that. The thing is about 7'x13'x1 so a decent size. No idea how that works out as B/F, the calculations seem like a dark art to me.

Gary - could you recheck those measurements; they seem a little out of line.

Thanks.

Assuming you meant 7 feet by 13 inches by 1 inch, that is 7.58 board feet. $120 for the board is $15.83 per BF. BTW, it's the same number of BF if you meant 7 inches by 1 inch by 13 feet. HTH.

Ah, I get you. Never knew how it was calculated or even what a board foot meant :p

The measurements were just my guesstimation. It's a one-off and the only one in the shop of it's type so I don't think it complies to any specific standard. They have a larger one off board of maple which is a couple of inches wider, bit longer and around 2 inches thick for $150 which is a golden-red color that I first thought was redwood because it looks so different from any other maple I've seen.

You figure BF by calculating everything in inches. width in inches X length in inches X thickness in inches divided by 144 (1 BF = 12 inches X 12 inches) SO 7 inches wide X 156 inches (13 feet x 12) X 1 inch thick divided by 144 equals 7.58 BF Total cost per BF would be $120 / 7.58 = $15.83 per BF

My Supplier just wrote me about this stuff last week since I was looking for a slab. He called it Edinam Mahogany. It was $6 a board foot and he had pieces up to 17 wide.
