Thanks to everyone involved in making this happen. I will be the first to post a picture of my latest end grain box elder bowl. Thanks to Tom Sweeney for the beautiful wood.

Gotta' love the color and figure of that wood! Nice form on the bowl, as well, Don! :) I've just GOT to get my mitts on some of that BE! 'Course, at the rate I've been going, my lathes are just going to get up and leave, all on their own, due to neglect! :( Good job, Don!

Very nice Don. Glad to see you're exercising your Jet lathe. Hope to see you Thurs night at GAW. Dick Sing is the demonstrator and it will be crowded.

Don,
Nice going on the box elder bowl! I personally like the thick walls.

I performed somewhat of an experiment last year and turned (2) osage orange and (2) cherry salad bowls. One of each wood had thinner walls, while the others had thicker, more substantial walls. All were priced similarly.

Guess which ones sold first? The ones with the thicker sides! Seems that people prefer (at least the ones I'm exposed to) to buy a bowl that "feels" like it costs $XXX (I'm being vague about the price but you get the idea).

Thanks to all for the compliments. This was my first attempt at end grain and it was a bear. I couldn't have pulled it off without the help of another turner. I have another piece just like it ready to go on the lathe. It will be interesting to see what I learned from this.

Don, Can you tell me what finish you used? I would appreciate it. The bowl looks super.

Ray, I sanded to 600 grit and applied several coats Tung oil letting each coat dry. I then used several coats of wax and buffed in between coats. Hope this helps.

I like the colors that Box elder produces.
I have a small chunk of it I snatched out of Terry Quirams truck while at the CSBBC.
Awaiting my 4-jaw chuck so I can make a small platter out of it.
Steve:)

Don,
That sure looks awesome. Box Elder will always get my attention. I pass a BIG old BE tree every day at work and am just hoping it'll shed some stuff I can use. Nice work. I too like the thicker walls I like wood to feel substantial and meaningful.

Don, now that is a strikingly beautiful bowl, form, and wood seem well suited for each other.

Yeah, Thanks for bringing this back to life. I still have it but unfortunately the color has not held up that well.
I have kept it out of the sun but the brilliant red is now more brown.:(

I'll have to check back here more often at SMC since my other place has about bit the dust.
