Just noodling around on the lathe, still learning to turn... Grabbed a chunk of interesting looking Pecan from the smoker wood pile and stuck it on the lathe. I have worked pecan in the flat before and I keep forgetting how hard this stuff is, and how quickly it dulls tools... I was VERY happy to have my Wolverine set up as I had to sharpen a couple of times to get through this...

I am still learning, so any helpful pointers would be appreciated...

David nothing wrong with the turning, but it is a dangerous candle stick.
Tall and with a very small foot, even more so by rounding that foot, any jarring of the table and the candle will fall over, not a good thing.
If you turn a round disk-like wider base for it, and turn/drill an opening to fit the candle holder in, maybe even glue it, it would be a much better piece IMO

David - Leo has a very valid point! Last thing you want is for your candle to get knocked over! At the very least - melted wax can be a real problem to try and get out of some things!

Nice form on this and the finish looks pretty good also. Add a slightly larger foot and I think you have a winner!

Nice catch guys... I thought the base looked funny to me...

I guess I need to fish through the smoker wood pile again...

I need a good chain saw if I am going to keep this turning stuff up... My little electric just won't cut the mustard, let alone hard woods like Pecan, or Oak...

Cool!!! More tools!

Seriously - a good chainsaw really comes in handy. Nothing more frustrating than having no chainsaw at all or one that is underpowered or to small! Looking forward to seeing your new chainsaw gloat!

I have never used it myself either, but I know that Pecan is a species of Hickory, so I have always thought that it may be similar. I've got a lifetimes supply for smoking (Hickory), so I have never been inclined to try it.

Similar to other Hickories. Not quite as heavy, and it leaves a bit of a nutty taste in the meat. I like to smoke Beef with it. For poultry I use a blend of Pecan and Mesquite chunks which seems to work out really well...

Pecan grows like weeds down here. I get more limbs than I know what to do with most years. I can go through my local craigslist for millable logs for free... I am looking forward to getting a decent chain saw so that I can bust down some of these for bowl blanks and such...

Thanks for the info. Sorta like Pin Oak for me here, grows like a weed around me so thats what I use for smokin most of the time. Comes right out of the firewood pile.

Ok highjack is over.:D
