Before I got into bowl turning I spent allot of hours at the lathe turning Flutes
I have done a couple of hundred of them and now only do about 6 a year for the fun of it.
A photo of 3 I did last year.
Anyone else make these?

Welcome Brad. It sure is not all about bowls - coming from a spindle turner. I have not made flutes but would like to try. Here's an 'opportunity' to make a tutorial and show off your stuff.

I agree with Paul about you putting a tutorial together. That would be fun to try making a flute. Nice work there Brad !

Brad,

I couldn't agree with you more. Even though I have made and will continue to make a lot of bowls, I really enjoy spindle turning pens and bottle stoppers, candle holders, vaces etc. I also make boxes, and I am looking forward to starting hollow forms. I also would like to see a tutorial on flutes. I recently did a tutorial on ornament globes, and while it is a lot of work, I really enjoyed it and the comments it brought.

In my opinion, one of the best things about a lathe is the fact that so many different things can be made with them. If a person wants to specialize and make only one or a few kinds of items and they enjoy doing it, I say thats just as good as a person who makes everything under the sun.

Tutorial! Tutorial! Tutorial!

I think the public has spoken. I would love to make a few of these. I wanted to make a recorder, but they are mush more difficult (I assume) due to the varying bore.

I have also wanted to try something like this but I didnt even know where to start. I dont even know anything about music. If your not able to do a tutorial can you recommend a book, video, or a web site.

Thanks GT

Well a Tutorial would be a little to much for me to do at this time BUT I will list some helpful links. The turning of the wood is the easy part its getting the sound that takes most of the work.

So I would suggest two groups on yahoo and one simple book.
http:// groups.yahoo.com/group/nativeflutewoodworking/
and http:// launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/basic_naf_making/
((NOTE: copy links to your address bar - be sure to remove space after // before activating link))

The first group was the one that helped me the most in learning how to craft these flutes. Look in the file section lots of good info.

Makes one piece fluteblanks at reasonable prices if you don’t want to do a two piece bore and want to just jump in. This is a very good site for blanks I have bought allot over the years from them.

A good starter book at least I think so now it uses hand tools and not a lathe but you can see when its time to use a lathe or not.

Have a look at his site some good info on it to.
And doing a Gogle on how to make a NAF will give you allot of hits.

And last but not least if you would like to hear my flutes you can do so at this link

Hope that helps
Thanks for the comments.

I had seen this one a while back. But I haven't been brave enough to try it.

Bowls, I thought it was all about pens. Don't tell me that soon I am going to want something bigger than the new Delta midi sitting in a box in my garage. :)

Very cool... It seems that there's no limit to what one can make on a lathe.
