Hickory staining

Wife gave me the go ahead to build new doors, drawers and fronts for the kitchen. She selected hickory based on the look of some doors at a big box store. Simple really, Shaker style with a center rail and thin panels.

Now the rub. Some of the wood is particularly light in color. Some not so. She wants to darken the lighter wood some what. Any suggestions?

My only other thought is to buy only hickory with a lot of dark wood in it.
