Interesting couple of articles on HA smoothers -- at least some of which are called "low-angle" planes but which are in reality high-angle planes when one looks at the angle of the cutting surface vs the wood.
I know I've mangled this intro, but if you're still with me at all, give them a look. Very worthwhile, IMHO.

The "gist" of it: High, even very high, cutter angles seem to do quite well at smoothing problem woods.
