This is a maple vase I finished last week. It has some very tight curl in it as well as very dark color. Most people think that it is walnut. It is 11 1/2" tall by 9" wide finished with deft.
Thanks,
Jack

Jack - nice vase. I recognize that cream and green color of the maple. You did a great job with the turning and finish. Have to say, though, I find the flare/top too large for the vase. Just my opinion. Very nice work, though.

Another stunning beauty, Jack. And yeah, I would have said that was walnut if you hadn't pointed out it is maple.

I have the opposite view of Mike. Not that there is anything wrong with his - everyone likes different things, which makes life interesting. I like the neck of the vase. It has a classical Greek feel to it, as do many of your pieces.

Jack, that is a beautiful piece, and so timely!! Just yesterday I saw a piece with a similar shape, and told my wife that I wanted to attempt one of those. I saved the pic in my file.

Yours has a little different treatment on the flare, and I like yours better - particularly the chamfer on the rim.

The wood is gorgeous!!

Notice how Steve is checking out the photography nowadays nearly as much as the turnings!!:D Every since he got that new camera..... I am a little afraid he is going to sell his lathe for new lenses for the camera!!;)

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I had planned on this piece being about on inch taller, but the blank had a bad check in the bottom when I started turning so I turned away the bottom to take out the check. I tried turning the bottom in a little more as I got closer to the bottom and it helped the shape in my eye. This blank had been laying under a small john boat I have on a rack on the north side of a small storage building in my back yard for more than 2 years. If you seal your wood up and keep it semi dry and in the shade one can keep blanks for a long time.
Thanks again,
Jack

Jack, lovely wood and well turned. My mentor would possibly make a disparaging comment about spittoons, but I like the form. More of a Grecian urn feel, and nothing wrong with that.

Very nice vase Jack. I really like the proportioning and the chamfer @ the top is quite pleasing. Great piece of wood & photography.

Jack, I have some maple like that, but not quite as pretty! You did a very nice job on the vase, the form is great and the finish is spot on. Keep on impressing us.
