Parting tools ?

I'm new to turning & have recently got in a set of BB parting tools. Being new to these, I was surprised that they are ground straight on the angles. Does anybody hollow grind these, or is this the way they are always ground?:confused:

I use an 8" grinder, so have a 4" radius hollow grind on mine. The cutting angle is probably more important than hollow vs straight grind and it is difficult to get a consensus on what that should be.

When I got mine new - they were straight edged. After sharpening for a few years they have a nice hollow grind (4" radius also) on them and work just as good as new!

Thanks Dennis. the drawing on the left is the way they came in. I'm assuming the drawing on the right is how you grind them? I also have an 8" grinder, so i drew that radius.

Mine also had a straight grind on the 3 of them when I bought them. They now have a hollow grind on them.

Mine were straight when new....then had a hollow grind....now have a combination because I have started honing them just like I do my skews.....
