I've seen several of these on the net and thought I'd have a go at making one for myself. Here's my attempt at making one. This thing will really hog off the wood!

Great job, John. Where did you get the insert?

John - very professional looking work on the tool! I have yet to try one of these - so would also be interested in where you got the insert.

Good looking tool and the handle really looks good.

Woodcraft now carries the inserts packaged with the screw. Great looking tool and I must agree it sure gets the waste out of the way in a hurry...Bill..

Bill - I looked on Woodcraft's site but couldn't find anything. Do you have a link? Thanks!

John,

What was the material you used for the shaft of the tool? HS steel, stainless steel, etc? I have one that I purchased which I love made from stainless steel, but I'm thinking (and that is dangerous) that oil quenched HS steel would work as well as the stainless.

Thanks John. That's one of the ones I used. Got the round one for the ci0 and the little one for ci2(pens). When I made my 3 I just used 1/2" square soft steel (called key way blanks) from a local hardware store. $3 will get a 12" piece....Bill

I'm going to try making one myself. Did you just grind a square notch on the end of the bar where the cutter goes, or is the back end of the notch beveled to match the cutter?

I just ordered some inserts from Global Tooling. I bought the 15mm x 15mm x 2.5mm. From what I've read they don't last quite as long (different carbide formula) as the Easy Rougher inserts, but for $20 for a box of 10 I don't think you'll go wrong.

The screws are on a different page in the box on the right:

Rick, For the tool shaft plain cold rolled carbon steel is just fine. Anything beyond that is overkill. You certainly do not want a hardened steel if you're going to drill and tap it.

I bought the Ci1 with the round carbide insert and it really works well on end grain, especially for hollowing. The cut finish is like glass, much better than with side grain cuts. I'm putting one on an elbo hollowing tool to replace the 1/4" square cutter.

Also, because the top face is flat, you can lay it upside down on a diamond hone and sharpen it, or at least hone it.

Does anyone know the thread on the screws? Is it, by chance, 8-32?

Mine are metric, I used a 6 x 1 tap and an 13/64 bit for the starter hole.

Dave,

I just ground a square shoulder that's just short of the thickness of the insert so the insert wouldn't turn.
