Watch this video. This is an ultimate woodworking project. Wonder how precise one has to be and what wood to use to make this mechanism to perform. Ingenious!

Wow, even if you can get past the skill to make all those components, what about designing the thing in the first place!!?? Thanks for the link, i'll be sharing this one.

Great stuff. There's a collection of videos by the maker here:

I think this is the maker's web page:

I can't find anything about his technique. Maybe somebody who speaks Japanese can help.

Pretty cool. But I don't know how long I would play with it. Certainly shorter than what it took to make!

that one will stay a spectator sport for me... very neat no doubt the guy has intelligance but i would loose my mind tryin trying to figure how to make it much less trying to use it.. be like trying to play an xbox360

Someone has a whole lot of time on their hands or maybe an engineering major in college.

My 9yr old son and his friend just saw that. I'm hoping they've forgotten about it by morning.

I agree. What is it good for? If I wanted to make such,I'd make it out of stainless steel.

I'm not denigrating the guy's ingenuity, buy it took a long time to build, out of a very wrong material for such an item, and it really has no use, except for the wow factor. I don't think the creaking and groaning device will work for too long without starting to need repairs.

I used to make stuff like that but then graduated to making...........

.....cutting boards :o:o:o

The talent of some is awesome.

Amazing craft. But wouldn't it be faster just picking up the blocks of wood by hand. Seems a little inneficient.:D

I'm not much of a bettin' man, but if I was I'd bet that thing was designed in solidworks or a similar program for fabrication on a CNC machine. Probably a design exercise for engineering students.
As far as the function, the japanese seem to really love what they call "chindogu", or 'unuseless' items. Things like a floor standing lamp on wheels so you can walk down a dark alley safely or a hat with a roll of toilet paper on it for when you have hay fever and need to blow your nose often.
They do perform a needed function, but....

check out the solar powered lighter and the panoramic camera-

Yep. That would be a good project for a CNC router.
