Ever seen pine marqkeau veneer over oak on table?

I have what appears to me as a pine veneer in marquee design over an oak solid wood. Does this make since? It appears to be a lacquer finish , can I just re coat with lacquer ( or even wiping varnish)?

Appearances are not a good indicator of the finish. How did you determine it's lacquer?

IS the finish still intact? Why are you wanting to add finish?

I first applied a little bit of denatured alcohol and did not get a sticky like feeling afterwords. I then applied some laquer thinner and did get a sticky surface afterwords, I was going by the finishing book by Bob Flexner.

If it's lacquer then additional lacquer would be better than varnish.
