I got a set of Pelitor's with the radio for Christmas. Protecion seems great but the radio reception is poor.

Does anyone have a better suggestion?

Not a radio, but I've been looking at the Peltor bluetooth headset to listen to streaming audio over my macbook.

I think they also make a radio version

You might look at getting a regular set of hearing protectors and just sticking a set of ipod or radio earbuds underneath. I used to do that before I had my set of WorkTunes.

Very pleased with them.

I don't use a radio as part of my hearing protection anymore. About a year ago I was working on my table saw. When I finished cutting I put up some pieces of lumber and reach over the blade to pick up a piece of scrap. To my amazement, the saw was still running and I could not hear it with the radio on. Scared me to death. Damn, I was lucky that day.:(

I agree on not having music blaring...... Almost the exact same thing happened to me.

I wonder if one of those active hearing protectors (like the one in the sale tek4 kit at HD) would help with that problem?

Leo and Kyle have a point. The local Running club I belong to outlaws hearing devices during runs/races because of similar issues. A high school student was hit near by as he crossed the street (not at a crossing) listening to music. Safety first! If you have to have tunes, can you put it in on in just one ear?

I sometimes wear a set of ear muffs and place the ear buds of my mp3 player in my ears before putting on the ear muffs when I mow the lawn, never in my shop. They work just fine. My MP3 player has a built in radio, but none of the local stations play the music I like anymore so I have my own 13 hour collection that I listen to in random order.

I bought a set of "Work Tunes" when Lowes had then on sale for $39.99. Unfortunately they aren't sensitive enough to pick up my favorite station. It's a lower power station that plays oldies. I have though about getting a FM transmitter, and hooking it to my big radio.

That'll Work! I use my WorkTunes with an iPod FM transmitter to listen to my collection, commercial-free AND wirelessly! Connecting the output of a good FM tuner to the tramsmitter would work Too!

Lee Valley have their own brand. I just picked up their unit with FM, CD and MP3 connectivity. $49 Canadian. The added benifit is the great return policy Lee Valley has. See this link:http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=58699&cat=1,42207,42227

I like these no more bulky ear muffs and no more ear buds falling out of your ears when they are under the muffs. and they are only 15.00 today it looks like

The tek4 Ryobi set works nice but you have to plug in your own music source. They are 69.00 at HD. Some stores have a set of tools including the hearing protectors for $49.00 on clearance.

In the shop I've never used ear buds, but while mowing I've always put ear buds under my ear muffs. The only problem I've had is catching the wire on a tree branch or one of the control levers on the tractor which makes me nervous, not for my safety because they just pull away, but for the safety of a $100+ set of ear buds. Running the wire under my shirt helps tremendously. When Woot.com ran a deal on the buds Steve linked to I ordered some of them but haven't used them other than for a few minutes to try them out.

1. Rig a lamp so it goes on when the spiny thing is on. Ideally, it'll put some more light on the work area.

2. Assume EVERY tool is running and keep clear at all times.

Santa brought me a pair of the Pelitor's for Christmas. They work great...when my lights are off. My Lowes lights really mess them up.

I went through two of the cheaper peltors with built in speakers. they just did not hold up.

I bought the tech 4 from HD and like them. They do block out a lot of noise and the I pod plug is nice.

I wasn't sure what to buy. I like the Ryobi, but don't want the rechargable batteries. I don't think the Work Tunes will receive the stations I want to listen to. So, I picked up a pair of the noise canceling ear muffs from Harbor Freight. For $15 they aren't bad. Now I'm kinda glad I didn't spend extra on a music input. When I need the hearing protection on, I don't need sounds other than from the machine I'm using.
