I am using a new Amana adjustable chamfer shaper cutter that is 130mm in diameter on a 1-1/4" spindle. Should I place the cutter low on the spindle or up high so the spindle doesn't have to be raised as much? I can see logic for both options, but I feel sure one or the other is correct

My "rule of thumb" is to place cutters as low on the spindle as possible. There are times when you need the cutter placed higher on the spindle but for me, this is an exception, not a rule.

I'm with David on this one. The higher the cutter head the more the force of it spinning could cause it to deflect or have any runout. Having it lower on the spindle has always seemed more stable and secure.

x3 on locating it closer to the bearings.

+1 on what Brian said. Spindle runout and deflection is a good reason to mount it as low as possible.

Thanks, guys, I think my question is decisively and correctly answered.
