My cousin felled a tree a couple of weeks ago and I got 4 of the log sections, in exchange for turning a couple of vessels for him and his girlfriend. He has no idea what kind of tree it was and neither do I. So if anyone knows what this wood is, please enlighten me. It turns real nice when wet and likes to check rather quickly from a fresh chainsaw cut. Thanks in advance. Sorry about the poor quality photos. Well I forgot how to post photos so here's a link... http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/Glenn_W_2009/IMG_0832.jpg

Cut the pith out ASAP. You'll be left with badly split and cracked blanks otherwise.

I have no idea what it is, but I got some recently cut apple blanks a couple years ago...big suckers, 18" dia or so. I learned the hard way how drastic pruning over the life of a tree can introduce all sorts of stresses in the wood, and how easily it cracks...even after the pith is removed.

I second that it might be maple, maybe red or silver maple.

Depending on where it was growing an such, the age of the tree etc. It definitley looks like cherry to me. If it where maple the bark would be different and the wood not so reddish. Once you cut into it you will know if it is cherry as the smell will be sweet and cherry like! The radial checking pretty much seals the deal for me, as cherry will check like that in a few minutes left unsealed.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll call it 'Could be Black Cherry' :). The blanks were sealed immediately after I turned them, except for one-a 6 inch diameter by 13 inch tall vase blank. It has since begun to crack. I'll fill the checks with an epoxy/filler mixture. Haven't yet decided just what to use as filler.

@ Dick-- If the checks aren't too bad, that's when an epoxy/filler mix comes into play, I suppose. It's a pain to use but its better than tossing the blank into the burn pile.
