Focal length education?- newbie

After unsuccessfully researching for explanation of the reasons and affects for using different focal length lens for laser engravers, can someone direct me to a primer or provide a source that will contain informative detail on that subject. I'm familiar with understanding the basics of focal length basics as it relates to depth of field issues in camera applications but need a better knowledge of how that translates to laser engraving application. What are the considerations in choosing different focal length lens?

the shorter the FL the finer the kerf line, the longer4" lens is for a straighter shoulder and also if you are working on projects where you need the extra clearance
