Not the normal type instructional type, its a story about a guy by the name of Dick Proenneke, its title is "alone in the wilderness".My libary has it and it is some times aired on nat geo or pbs tv.It is a facinating story.I showed it at my game preserve and every one enjoyed it.you can search a small part of it on utube or google it.Enjoy

John,
I watched Mr Proenneke's story on PBS and found it to be one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Thanks for reminding me and letting other folks know about it.

One of my favorite "non-instructional" WW vids is "Ben's Mill", from 1981, about a water powered wood working mill operating in rural Vermont since 1848. I believe the film is "out of print", though some libraries may have it on VHS, but fairly long excerpts which combined contain about 2/3rds of the film can be viewed here http://www.folkstreams.net/film,187 and here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2KJbRHO76s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2KJbRHO76s)
If you think that Unisaw from the '50's qualifies as "Old Iron", get a load of this ;)

I originally read the book "Alone in the Wilderness" a number of years ago and loved it. When I learned there was a DVD out I scooped it right up. I've watched it numerous times and always discover something new and continue to grow my appreciation for this gentlemen's amazing skills and ability to live life the way he wanted to.

I know the original post wasn't about ben's mill but that video was very interesting. don't know why they ever bothered to invent the tractor. I like how, at the end, those horses took off with that load of logs like it wasn't even there.

ben's mill made me wnat to see "alone in the wilderness" even more.
thanks for the post.

"Alone in the Wilderness" is so simply done that it is elegant. I watch it everytime PBS shows it. The guy was incredibly talented and intelligent.

Don't forget to check out the ~25 minute portion on Youtube as well. There's a portion of Ben making a cattle watering tub that shows much of the water powered woodworking equipment in operation. I remember when I 1st saw this thinking to myself, "This guy could make a fortune selling "rustic" hot tubs"!
