Wow, that is a really nice looking plane. Did you machine all of the parts?

Beautiful! I'm curious about the rear infill and tote. Are they one piece of wood or are they joined somehow? I've been wondering how that would be done. Also, what is the bed angle?

Beautiful

For me, I have been thinking about making a plane for about four years. Maybe in another four I will get started.

This was a kit from the Shepherd Tool Co I bought while they were still in business. I certainly don't have the skill or the desire to make one from scratch. It was bedded at 47 deg, IIRC. The infill was cocobolo and the tote was made in three pieces. The two sidewall pieces and the tote piece. The kit did not go together quite as smoothly as the directions indicated it would and it took much longer than the 7 hours they said it would. I think sanding and buffing the lever cap alone took three hours.

I'm still tuning it to try and get really fine shavings. But after taking it to the 4000 waterstone and putting a slight secondary bevel I can get ~.002 shavings and a nice glassy surface on curly maple. I need to work on the mouth a little more to get the chip breaker closer to the blade edge and polish up the blade more, but it's getting there.

It may require a finer stone than 4000 to get a finer shaving.

I was able to get good shavings with just a 4000 stone, but was amazed at how much thinner shaving became when I acquired an 8000 stone.

If you don,t get any tear out on curly maple with a .002 shaving why would you go tinner than that? it just meen more work! But I'm sure that if you want to achive a tinner shaving, you can... but like Jim said you might have to go to a 8000 stone or higher! keep us updated!

That's a beauty!! You should be issued a gloat badge for sure.

I did a Shepard Tool thumb plane several years ago and it turned out wonderful. Very handy and the blade is really good.

Again, GREAT JOB !

As everyone has said, that is one beautiful plane. Are there any companies that currently offer an infill plane kit?
