Can you trust the router lift scale?.

Can you count on the fact that you move the thumb wheel down .016 and the bit moves down .016? According to my height gauge it seem to "jump" .009 but will return to zero.

I would like to be able to take a test cut, measure, and make one offset. Seems to be accurate going down then up.

Is this normal movment down?

Backlash in the screw. You need to go farther, and come back to the reading you want. And probably always in the up direction so the friction in the slides doesn't have an effect.

Common practice on all machine tools, except those with preloaded ballscrews.

Ditto Wes

You should always climb up to your desired measurement. When using my bench dog lift and I want to return to the original height I move past the measurement then come back up on it to get rid of the backlash. Wes said it better. . . just listen to him.

That's what I thought,to move down .005 you's go to -.015 and the up to -.005
