View Full Version : New math?

Ok, this is confusing me. I went to Home Depot today and was looking at insulation. (I want to insulate my garage shop at some point, was looking to see how much it might cost.)

The package of insulation says on the outside that it is 15 inches x 94 inches. By my calculations this is roughly 9.75 square feet. But, the package claims it's 48.96 sq. ft.?? Is this some new math, or am I missing something? Somebody please explain this to me.

There are 5 pieces of 15"x94" inside the package?

I believe the entire roll is 49 some odd square feet, but there should be 5 94" strips that are 15" wide. That comes to a total of 49 square feet. The reason they come in 94" sections is that it fits in a typical 8 foot wall intallation.

You only calculated the sqft for one piece... @ a quantity of 5 the math works.

This is hysterical and maybe even unprecidented... 4 answers within 2 minutes, ALL with the same conclusion! When I started typing, there were no replies yet...

Well, see, that's what confused me. The package doesn't say there are 5 pieces in it. ;)

That's pretty good, then. For the price of the packages, I should be able to insulate my garage for about $100, if I don't insulate the ceiling.

Insulation the walls and not the ceiling is a complete waste. Most heat loss is through the ceiling because heat rises. That is why a minimum of R19 will be found in the ceiling, but only R11 is in the typical 2x4 wall. You would be better off insulating just the ceiling if you had to choose.

Yup, my 24 x 30 shop has 2 x 6 construction. The walls are insulated with fiberglass insulation, but the ceiling is not yet insulated. I ran the 5000 watt heater that is highly praised in another thread for an HOUR and the temp MAY have risen 3 degrees or so. I have the insulation for the ceiling...just haven't installed it yet. Guess what I'm doing for the next couple of weeks... (besides hitting the slopes to do some Nastar!)
