Anyone know of any activities of interest in the Kona area or elsewhere on Big Island during the last 2 weeks of January. I know that they have the Big Island Turners show in March and I hate to miss that. I will be looking for some wood also. Please post or send me a message.

Thomas, Do a search on-line to see if there are any local turners or clubs that will be in your area of vacationing! By the way you lucky dog!! I lived on Oahu for 10 months in 1985-86 and had lots of fun living on the north shore and surfing and eating lots of seafood! The 2 hour bus ride to work every morning was no fun though! I wish I knew then what I know now, I would have some wood from there on hand!

Have fun and I am sure you will be able to find someone willing to share some of their time with you while on island.

Thomas,
There was a turner in Hilo with a showroom that had bowls from wood from around the world. the shop was out back of the showroom, open air with a roof for the occasional rain shower. As a non-turner, I found it fascinating. Went to it as I always try to find a locally made wooden bowl on my travels - only time I struck out was on a trip to Utah - had to settle for a stone bowl. (of course, now I find that Utah is a hotbed of turning, but as a tourist, try and find a wooden bowl)

For another "dont miss" activity, visit the seahorse farm; its between the airport and Kona. January is a time for whale-watching, take the tour to the observatories (and watch for "invisible cows" - seriously!), and the ATV tour is fun but pricey. Go to the volcano and walk through a lava tube and past the steam vents.

There are more woodturning and woodworking galleries on the Big Island than you can shake a stick at. A couple of my favorites were the one at the Volcano National Park and then on the opposite end of the island you will want to visit Hawi and Kapaau and see Kelly Dunn's gallery. There's also a great wood store near the airport on the Kona side called Aloha woods that will UPS your wood home for you. Man, I'm jealous. Hawaii in January sure beats shoveling snow in Utah.

For wood supplies on the Big Island you should look up the following two people who are both great people and have great wood:

Chris (Kalai) Allen

koawoodhawaii@msn.com
http://www.koawoodhawaii.com (http://www.koawoodhawaii.com/)

Joel Lawson
808-936-2196
dawoodshop@hawaii.rr.com
ebay: eganlaw

Ohhh, now you did it. Getting joel's ebay name I saw some of his stuff for sale. Time to order more wood.

Thomas,

Our club the West Hawaii Woodturners has a meeting on Jan. 9th so it sounds like you will just miss it. We love to have visitors join us when in town.

Not sure when the Big Island Woodturners next meeting is but here is a link to the web page.

I know visitors are welcome at all meetings. They meet on the other side of the island around Hilo.

Feb is the Wood Guild show.

Go to the bottom and they have the dates for the show. Jan 30th is the open reception.

Aloha Woods is fun to browse but overpriced for most of us.
If you want some Koa let me know and we can browse some other places.
If you want Monkeypod I have some myself.

On this side of the island check out Harbor gallery in Kawaihae and of course Kelly Dunns in Hawi. Right in Kona you have Halualoa where there must be 5 or 6 gallaries including Cliff Johns. It's right up the street from my house.

PM me and hopefully we can meet up.
Also check out the names and works of some of the members in our club. Many of them don't mind visitors and/or I can ask them if it's OK if you would like to see there shops.

Aloha, Pete

The other side of the island has some gallaries but it might be better to ask someone from The Big Island Woodturners Club for a list.

Peter,

I sent your a PM. Hopefully we can link up while I am there.

I'd be interested in visiting others if the opportunity comes up. It is always interesting to see other shops and learn from their arrangements and facilities.
