Table top repair of Burn?

Its a red oak table top with a 2" dia burn that looked to be charred to at least 1/8" depth.

How would you repair?

I was thinking to place an inlay diamond at the burn spot to cover and then 3 other identical inlays to make it appear as a symetrical design of the table. This of course requires to strip, sand and refinish the entire table top as installing the inlay would require scraping and sanding that would damage the existing finish around it.

Any different ideas?
