The LOML bought a lathe several weeks ago and I have found myself wanting to hog it. I have made several pens and have been very happy with those, but I haven't done anything else until today. This is my first attempt of making a bowl. I altered it several times until I was finally happy with a design and I finally came up with this shallow bowl. I know that I still have a lot to learn, but I was pretty excited with this first attempt.

Nice Kristie. What size is it and what is the wood?

Bob,
The Bowl/Dish is 4.25" High X 6.75" Wide at the top & 4.50" Wide at the bottom X 1.25" Deep. The wood is from a Sassafras tree that we had to cut up to get out to the main road during the ice storm in January 09'.

Welcome to SMC Kristie. Beautiful wood and a mighty fine bowl. Sign it, date it and save it to compare a year or so down the road.

Kristie, nice bowl! I just cut up some sassafras, and didn't have near the color and variation as yours - very nice. The sapwood adds a bit of character.

My husband drug the majority of the tree up to the house, so I am sure that we will have fun with it. I am super excited to have had the bowl turn out so nicely, especially since it was my first shot. I am hooked! :D

Yeah Jim it is quite handy having a wife that is getting into turning, she has already told me Im going to have to get a bigger bandsaw if we are going to be doing this kinda work. I love it.

Kristie, It is great that you and your hubby can share the interest in the same things! My wife is not a turner, but she loves the things I turn for her so I can so no wrong!

Great bowl for the first shot at it, since it is mostly end grain it must have been an adventure. Have fun and keep posting your progress.

Welcome to the Creek,

Jeff

Kristie,
Like others have said WELCOME to the Creek.
Very nice bowl/dish you did a great job on your 1st, and it sure looks a lot better than my 1st.
Keep it up it just gets better.

Jeff...it was very challenging for the first bowl. The wood was very hard and took many hours just hollowing out the inside. It just amazes me what you can get out of a chunk of wood that has been lying on the side of the road for almost a year.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, I greatly appreciate them.

Another one into the Vortex....

A very nice job on the first bowl Kristie. It beats my first one all to pieces... I'd show a picture but it's never made it out of my parents house....

I wonder how fast and how far Kristie and Glen will fall into the vortex if they're egging each other on? Enjoy the trip!
