View Full Version : It's D day.

That's right, D(elivery) day for the new saw. I've been nervously waiting this morning. It was almost 11:00 before the UPS site showed it out for delivery.........

Well, I heard a truck, and sure enough, it's here. Saw body looks to be in great shape. There were a couple holes in the cardboard box down low where it looked like a forklift may have hit it, but not even a scratch inside. Plastic wasn't even disturbed.
The fence and rails on the other hand had slid part way out of their box. Mounting hardware bags were loose (2 of them. need to make sure it's all there and nothing missing). We were in the process of sitting down for lunch, so I haven't pulled everything out, but no visible damage to the rails. The driver noted the box damage on the delivery slip, so if a problem, it can be taken care of. All othr boxes look pristine.
It's funny, I started this thread after waiting 1/2 of the day for the delivery. Didn't think it would be during the morning. I was going to ask for you guys to help keep me occupied until it got here, as I was starting to pace. :D But all is well, and I have time to go get the pipe and fitting I need.
I've taken some pictures. I'll post those and more after we get back and I have some more time with the saw. So it won't be OFFICIAL until then. ;) Jim.

Hi Jim,

Great news! I'm still not envious but I am.

Jim - Congrats!!!!!!! I sorta lost track on your delivery situation in your other thread....I remember they quoted April, then Mr. Grizz himself said that must be wrong, more like January.....and here it is, not even the end of December, and it's already been delivered.

And you thought you were going to be able to wait until April.....you weren't even able to contain yourself for half a day! LOL.

Jim,

Congrats, I am wondering when mine will arrive. Hopefully not until next week as I have to make room just to store it until I can clean out the garage more throughly.

Jim---Last I heard you thought you'd be waiting until April, glad that turned out not to be the case. I can feel your excitement. Nothing like having a new, nice big piece of equipment dropped off, especially after all of the waiting. Hope you enjoy the new saw.

Sorry all. I guess I previewed my post, then didn't send it! :o Here it is, and I'll add on at the end.

Thanks guys! No, I slept ok. Just restless this morning.;)

Just finished inventorying everything but the nuts and bolts. Looks like everything is there. One extension has a thin cut in it I can feel with my fingernail and a 3/4 mark on the same one, different spot that you can't feel anything on. I'll talk to Griz about that. Paint is perfect!! I didn't realize the green was metallic. Very pretty. It's a shame 3 of the 4 sides of the table and extensions get covered up. The extension table has 2 corners bruised to the point the laminate came off the corners. Not sure it is a big deal, but the table isn't flat there. But it doesn't look flat along the entire edge either where the rubber edge trim is. Again, not sure if it is a big deal.
Ok, we're about to head out. But here is one picture for proof. 136636 I'll be back later! Jim.

We got back in just before 6:00, and after I put stuff away that we went out for, I headed straight to the shop. I got the saw off the 2 pallets, then installed the tilt wheel and the 2 extensions. Took a while to get set up and level by myself. Figured I'd save the next step of the rails until tomorrow. I hope the power cable I have on the Ridgid unit will make it to the power source. I hadn't looked at how it will have to be routed since I moved the duct drop for the saws. May have to get some more cable. And I guess I'll move the Ridgid back to 110 for a while. Will need some more cable to make that outlet 220. It's wired with 12 gauge, so that should be fine. Will need to get a 20 amp breaker for it though. Or I could cut off the lead I have going to where I planned the welder to plug in. I need to look and see if it is ok on a 30 amp breaker or if it needs more. If more, then I need to run 8 gauge wire instead of the 10 it has now. Hmmm.
I'll go download the rest of the pictures and be back in a minute. Jim.

Didn't realize I took that many pictures!!! I won't bore you with but a few of the 20 some odd I took.
My heart sunk when I saw this on the truck. Went ahead and got it all down to look at it. 136671 I just knew forklift forks had violated my baby. But not even a mark on the plastic inside the cardboard box! (See the left side of the box at the bottom edge.) The other one I still don't know about are the rails. Nothing seems to be scratched, but I'm not sure how. 136676 They were about 18" out of one end of the box. Styrogoam pieces broken and laying on the trailer floor.
OOPS! Hit the wrong button.
This pic is of the extension table. Both chips are about the same, so I'll only show one.136674
This last one is of the CI extension that has the cut mark. 136677 If I run my finger pad across it, I feel nothing. If I run my finger nail across it, it drops into what looks like a cut. The other mark on this one I'm sure will polish out. I don't feel it either way.
Time to go eat supper. I'll see if there is another picture that is interesting or not. I think this is all though. Jim.

So when she said lunch was ready and I hope you'll go run errands with me when we're finished, I said "I'd love to", or something like that. Jim.

Not even close. ;) I hoped we would get off work early today, but it doesn't look like it. 4:00 now and no mention of leaving. I may spend some time in the shop tonight and try the fence rail install. Then I'll check all the measurements tomorrow, measure for the electrical cord and see if what I have on the Ridgid will work, or if I need a new cord. If so, fire up will be sometime Sat. Jim.

Jim,

I was sure my G0691 would not be here until next week and I was just about to leave work when the buzzer for the back door rang. I went outside & there was my saw, the last thing on a 48 foot Fed Ex Truck.

Not a bit of damage as can bee seen in the picture below. The fence looks like it might have been retaped but it was fine also (both styrofoad endcaps were still in place) did yours come via ups? If so then that could be the reason for the forklift holes, lucky for you there was no damage. I always get better service from Fed Ex(no affiliation) and I am glad Bellingham uses them.

CONGRATS Greg! Glad it is in really good shape.
I've never had anything shipped by UPS Freight before. Driver was really nice and helpful. Sure talked a lot. Only other item that has come by truck was the dishwasher and it was one of the trucking companies, I forget which one. My cyclone even came by regular UPS.
Enjoy your weekend putting it together. I'm trying to decide if I want to go out in the cold to work on mine. I might run out for a few minutes, but I think I'll save the actual work until tomorrow when I'm rested. Jim.

ps: your pictures didn't come through. I'll copy and paste to see if I can get them.

Thanks Gary.
I just spent about 5 minutes out in the shop. Pulled the rail off the front angle iron. (It is shipped bolted together) I wanted to see if I could move the angle iron down some to move the fence to the right...I can gain 7", but go from 4 mounting points to 2. Hmm....Look at the mount to the rail, and every other mounting point is staggered front to rear. So you would have to move 2 spots down to do it there. That's too much off the angle iron for me. So I guess I'll mount it in the factory position for now, and get the longer Biese rails for my Biese fence, swap out and move this one to the contractor saw at a later date. No big deal, I just hoped I could move it to gain some extra capacity. 50" is probably more than enough, and after using it this way, I may decide it's all I really need anyway. Jim.

What, you stay up, hit the stroke of midnight, blow your party horn, drink a toast, and post on SMC about brisket??? :D (Don't know when you posted your time, but it shows 12:02 am on my screen. ;))

Pretty cold early this am, so I stayed in and mounted the ceiling fan first thing. Brownie points never hurt either.
So, with lunch time taken into account, I got a little over 5 hours in the shop on the saw. Man, I didn't think I'd ever get that riving knife aligned!!!
Ran into a couple issues:
1) One of the extension legs wasn't threaded all the way through, or had a bad burr at the far end. I tried to chase it with a bolt, and it messed the threads up on that too. Will ask for a new one if possible.136897
2) The extension table is worse than I thought where the 2 corners were "bruised". With the back and middle of the table flush with the CI extension, this corner is about 1/8" high. Might see if they will trade a couple ZCI inserts instead of a new table, and I'll make my own. They can still have this one back if they want. 136894136896
So those 2 things and the cut mark in the one CI extension housing is all that is wrong. 136898 None of these minor issues would keep me from using the saw. I still haven't fired it up yet. I do need a longer cord than I have to reach the outlet. I'll get out and get that tomorrow. I still need to slightly tweak the 90 degree setting for the blade stop. 45 was right on. 90 is very close. Blade was perfect parallel to the miter slot.

I think someone on one of the forums said something about the fence when you lock it in, the back of the fence pops up. Anyone else have this issue? Mine does. It's a little disconcerting I can easily build a bracket that will help hold the rear down. Can use one of the extra screw in buttons for the fence to adjust it at the back. Oh, the fence rail is dead perfect straight as far as I can tell with my 5' aluminum ruler. Fence slides very nicely. When locked down, it is very secure, except for the back being willing to come up in the air.
The other item I need help with is still on the riving knife...The instruction manual says it should be between 2 and 5 mm below the height of the saw blade. Mine is abut 8 mm below. I didn't see anything in the owners manual about being able to adjust it. Anyone know? If not, I'll ask Grizzly CS to transfer me when I call them about the 3 items that need attention, if they can transfer the call.

All in all, I'm thrilled so far with this136895. Now I need some supplies to build the mobile base! Jim.

edit: Forgot to ask...How much of the grease on the trunnion and tilt/height gearing should I remove? It's globbed on pretty thick. To the point that as I run the height and tilt through it's range a couple times, grease drops down to the dust pan below. I know it will collect dust with use, but I don't want to clean it dry either. Thanks!

Jeff Miller

The fence on mine will do that sometimes but I found that the square plate that the locking lever pushes against the guide tube needs to kind of fall down in place so it's flat when it is being pushed tight to the tube. And I put a little grease on the cam part of the locking lever so it locks a little smother and dosen't bind on that plate.

Hope that made sense.

Congrates Jim, that Rails box looks exactly like mine did. Grizzley needs to do something about their packaging. Saw is boxed well, but accessories not so much. have fun getting it set up. Looking for more pics. :D

Jim O'Dell
01-01-2010, 9:28 PM
Yes, that makes perfect sense Jeff. This one has plenty of grease on it. I even went over to my Biese and no, it doesn't do it. But it is about 2 or 3" longer, so the extra length and extra weight probably make the difference in it. I'm working on a solution. I'll post tomorrow if it works.;)
Gerry, I hear you about the packaging. But if it makes it to Grizzly from China and the packaging is all together, then the problem falls squarely on the domestic shipper. My saw and all the extra boxes were just loose in the tailer. Nothing was secured to the walls to keep it from sliding around. The floor is not non slip, so any sharp turn or sudden stop sends boxes like the rails sliding into other items. If proper care was taken when loading and securing the items, I bet UPS and other shippers could really cut down on their damage expenditures. Jim.

A little bit later than I wanted. Had a family over from 10:00 to 11:30 visiting dogs. Then my run out for the power cord, a seemingly never ending task of finding a flat head, non slot (Phillips, Torx, Robertson would have worked) 10-32 X 1" machine screw to replace the bent one that secures the throat plate on my Ridgid. It's amazing that HD and Lowes have it only in a slot version. Does anyone even use slot screws anymore???
Got the power cord changed out, required a little modification since the factory cord is 14 gauge. Only had 2 of the 3 needed eyelet crimps. :( Picked up a new package as we left to go meet LOML's brother and his wife for supper. They were up from Houston to watch their OSU Cowboys fall apart at the new Cowboy statium. Great meal at Uncle Julio's!! I almost couldn't bend over to finish the electrical for the saw!! Fired right up. NICE!!! I had emptied my pockets when we came in, so I couldn't do a nickel test. Did do a 3/8" fender washer test though. First time powered up it fell over. Stayed up on power down, then passed the power up and another power down sequence! (Yes, on edge:D) So I'd say it did fine. Haven't cut anything yet, but will tomorrow.
So later than I planned on, but it is working. Jim.

I just had a flashback:D

JEFF:)

It's comforting to know I'm not the only one!;)

I emailed the above pictures to CS yesterday. I changed one thing. I think one of the techs at work will have a metric tap and die set that I can chase the threads on the extension leg. After that it's just a metric bolt the way this foot is made. So while I told them about it, I said I could take care of it.
I did request a new CI extension table. If I knew what caused the mark, I might feel good about keeping it. But since there is no raised area around it, the damage was done prior to grinding the top, or it is a flaw in the casting. If the latter, I'm afraid of long term issues. They had no problems with that, and already had one on order. Won't be quick, but the saw is usable the way it is, so no problem.
The other item was the laminated extension table. I said I was willing to try another one, but my fear is that it would be damaged in shipping like this one was. I suggested that if it would work for them, I'd trade the extension table for a set of casters. Should be a good deal for them as they can still make a shipping claim, and I get casters I wanted so I can get my mobile base built quicker. Win/win situation. They didn't flinch and said they would get them out.
So more proof that Grizzly CS is just outstanding!!
Oh and I got the 2010 Grizzly catalog in the mail today....Life is Good! :D Jim.

Jim O'Dell
01-07-2010, 8:28 PM
My replacement CI wing and the casters in exchange for the extension table came in today! Man that was quick!!! I pulled the casters out first because one corner of the box was ripped open, and I wanted to make sure one hadn't fallen out. All there. MAN! Those casters are massive!!!! If anyone needs a heavy duty caster, these are the ones. Rated for 550 lbs each, it's a cast wheel with a polyurethane molded tire. The swivel is double ball bearings, and I'm guessing the wheels are single. There are 2 grease zerks, one for the wheel, one for the swivel! Looks like four 3/8" lag bolts will be used to mount them. These are serious casters! And they sell for $9.25 each. The non swivel ones are 8.25 each.
Then I looked at the CI extension. It was packed inside a larger box that was in great shape. Lots of the heavy paper that is folded up and looks like it was run over by some off road tires to make it cushion better was used on all sides of the individual box with the extension. The individual box was a little rough. The CI top is perfect! The paint on the outside edge not so much. :p It will be easy to sand and put a spray paint finish on so it won't rust. I'll mount it on the right side where it will be hidden by the rails and the torsion box extension I will build. I'll put the original good one on the left side.
Now I need to email them to see what to do with the damaged wing. Don't know if they want it back or not...we didn't talk about that. Could be that UPS will ask for it.
I think I've found an easy way to move the rails about 7" to the right. I'll do that when I change the CI wings out. Hopefully it will be warm enough this weekend to be in the shop. But it might not be until Sunday.:( And it may not be comfortable then. High about 36 Sat, and 45 on Sun.
I believe this order is complete and ready for the history books. I'll update my shop post as I make headway with the mobile base and DC hook up, or maybe start a different thread with questions. Thanks for cheering for me along the way. It has helped more than you realize! Jim.

Jim,
I would take a lot of the globbed grease off. Just doesn't need that much. Mine actually only had a thin coating on the rack gear, and I had to wipe some off as I adjusted the 45* stop. Have you fired it up yet??

Jim O'Dell
01-07-2010, 9:31 PM
Yes I did, Sat night about 8:30. You must have missed that post above. Didn't have a nickel, so I used a 3/8" fender washer. Fell over once, stayed standing up once. I thought that was pretty good.:D Now I've got to take it all apart and redo things somewhat. And get started on the mobile base. Jim.
