It's me. I carve these when I'm not in the mood for complicated stuff.

Wow, incredible on so many levels. Really awe inspiring. I'd love to see their tools and techniques.

I saw similar work as this in a Chinese restaurant in Boston a few years ago. The scenes were relief carved 3" deep in two long table tops protected by glass. They were museum worthy. There are many amazing carvers in that part of the world.

Anyone know what kind of wood that is? Possibly the linden family?

Are these images from a piece carved in Thailand? The wife of a friend of mine is Thai and they have a similarly carved piece that is approx 5' long that she brought back to the States. Very humbling to look at and realize the mastery that is involved. Thanks for sharing!

Back in 1971-72, I was in Okinawa driving down Route ! and there was a little old man in his front yard carving on a twisty pine log. Went by again about a week later and he had made a dragon about 9 feet long...I didn't have a camera to make a record for posterity...but I saw a lot of this talent there and in Viet Nam. I don't think nationality has anything to do with it. It is the mind set of the individual.

I am trying to remove the "chinese" from the original posting, but it doesn't allow me.

I don't think nantionality is the key here.

My intent wasn't to belittle the oriental nations but that anyone can create great beauty if they apply themselves. I will look forward to seeing some of your work.

I believe that after spending almost 2 years in Okinawa in 82-83 that the people of the Orient such as China,Japan,Korea,Thialand, and all other nations in that area have very deep roots in their history and the faith they have in there beliefs. I think many of the carvers are generational and have learned the techniques of their forfathers passed down over maybe centuries. They feel a great connections to the past and most all the carvings tell a story of something in their history. That is my take on it, the more it means to the carver the more beauty will be created in the works they do.

Beautiful works and thanks for sharing them,

Jeff

I don't get to this site so much but peruse once and a while . I am a thirty year woodworker and the last couple of years have really enjoyed getting into carving . This is outstanding work and certainly humbles this carver . Thanks for sharing the photo's .
