Anyone know of a source for a doamond honing(sharpening) stone with a curved edge . I am looking for one to do a final honing on the inside of bowl gouges. It would need to be very fine grit.

I've seen the wave type hones but would rather use something more basic in shape. A tapered cylinder or better yet, a flat stone with curved edges would be most useful.

Anyone know if these are available and where?

Alan Lacer sells such a hone. Click on the "Tools" tab and scroll down. I have one and really like it.http://alanlacer.com/

Craft Supplies USA also sells two hones that might meet your needs (the Henry Taylor teardrop shaped hones and the "cone" hone). http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Sharpening___Honing?Args=

I recall that several turners on this forum use the 600-grit diamond slipstone that is sold by Alan Lacer (alanlacer.com) for $88. I emailed Alan (amlacer@earthlink.net) on December 20th regarding the purchase of one of these. He replied that he was currently out and expected to have more in 4 to 6 weeks and would let me know when they are available.

If your interested, send him an email requesting notification of availability.

I'm not aware of any other diamond slipstones that are regarded as highly as his.

dmt makes a different, very nice slipstone for much less than the other you are tlaking about; amazon carries them, as do many other retailers.

Unless it is a new addition, the DMT diamond hone are tapered cone shape. Their rectangular flat hone only has diamond on one face; the sides are not rounded and has no diamond.
The Lacer has both long edged rounded of different radius. One edge is only about 1/8" wide. It can reach the bottom of very tight flute, say a V gouge.

Gordon, I think you meant to say that the DMT stone is NOT a tapered cone shape--the lacer stone is the tapered teardrop cone shape. Its on my wish list. I'm currently using a henry taylor blue silicon carbide stone, which takes quite a while to hone a tool with.....

I have the Alan Lacer hone and like it a lot. My time at the grinder in much less than before. I think it it worth the wait.

That appears to be the same hone sold by CSUSA http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Sharpening___Honing___Honing_Cone___honing_cone?Ar gs=). Depending on the cost of shipping, it appears to be cheaper at CSUSA ($21.99 v. $28.95). See the pictures below. The picture of just the hone is from CSUSA's website. The "action shot" is from DMT's website.

dmt also have one that looks like a carver's slip - i have one, and like it; i use it in conjunction with my dmt flat 'stones'. cost less, and don't believe anyone else's can do a better job. it's all metal with diamond on it.

I use the ceramic knife sharpeners for inside honing. They are 1/4"+ and put a nice polish on the edge. I have 2 grits. I find the diamond hones a bit rough, but I haven't used the round ones.
