I have a 3" Starrett sliding caliper labeled "L.S.S. Co. Athol Mass. U. S. A. No 425" It was my wife's grandfathers & is a beautiful little tool. However each time I used it to measure the thickness of a piece of wood it was off by about 1/8". I thought it was a machinists tool with measurements that were adjusted for contraction of metal cooling (I bought a Starrett ruler & learned that lesson from some Creek members) Anyway I bought one from Rockler & guess what...same thing. I was measuring from the wrong beginning point. Is there any hope for a 66 year old beginner dope who can't read a caliper?
