I am building a built in laundry rack for the laundry room trying to knock down the "honey do list", I have all the wood cut this is going to have 2 end rails with 4 rails in the middle to hang stuff on all made out of 3/4x3/4 popler and then painted.

In anycase I went to join it an relised my handy festool domino is to big. I need to join end grain to stright grain and it has to hold a little weight so just glueing I am not comfortable with. I was thinking of glueing an dpin nailing but than again I think I need more. I could by dowls which is the best solution now but how do I drill stright holes? Since I got the domino all my dowls where tossed. Do you tink I can do them by hand? Any other idears.

I would drill a straight hole down the center of a piece of 1"x1"x2" piece of hardwood on a drillpress. The piece of hardwood can be used to drill straight holes on your poplar 1x1 material. It acts as a guide and works well, I have used this type of jig to drill holes in table legs that are too awkward on a drillpress. I would also glue 2 1x1x4" pieces of 1/4 inch plywood on 2 sides of the jig to quickly reference where the hole is to be drilled.

Too big? I've jointed 1x1 with the 5mm cutter before. What cutter and fence settings are you using?

Can you cut mortises on the DP and put tenons on the rails without losing too much length?

Sorry my bad it is 3/4" pieces of wood. My smallest domino 6mm I think is 3/4 of an inch. I know they are comming out with something smaller but my dealer doesn't have it.

I could have sworn when I read the post it was 1x1 you were trying to join? At 3/4 x 3/4 I wouldnt be expecting the joint to bear much of a load.

It was 1x1 I relised my mistake whe I went and remeasured, so I changed the post. Long day sorry.

Ah, that would make for small tenons to hold laundry. You don't mention the span but anything over a couple feet would exceed my expectation of poplar in that size. I'd be tempted to run to the BORG for some OAK dowels and drill holes to match, 7/8" preferred for 3 feet or more. JMHO. A similar do-jobber at LOML's house is 6 feet but I used closet rod.

How about using half-lap joints?

No problem, I thought it was me! Some days what I read and what I remember are totally different! and those days are getting more frequent!

I think Glen has some good advice, poplar isnt a very strong wood at those dimensions, but then again without knowing the span and the load its hard to tell.
