OK - I have a friend who has a door shop - and some how they ordered a load of 4/4 beech that, after delivery to their shop and payment, the customer changed his mind and went ahead and paid for a different wood. So they have quite a few stacks of this beech - he tells me about it, and for $50 a pickup truck load, we can have what we want. So I called a friend of mine who has a 3/4 ton HD truck and we load that puppy up until the tires started to bulge. We drove away with the truck pretty full. My cut (half) was about 550 bd ft for $25. Probably a third of the boards range from 12"-18" in width, and all 8'. I figured I am pretty close to .046 cents a bd ft. and I have the pics to prove it below. Here comes a new workbench for sure, this spring.

I'm pretty sure that qualifies as a gloat.

Is that a gloat?

Yup, that's a gloat!

Have fun.

Yes, this definitely qualifies for a gloat.

It also qualifies for a "You Suck"!

I enjoy working with beech. It moves a bit if you live where that happens so plan for that and no worries. I have used it for vise faces (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=86588&d=1208313092) for years. Mills beautifully.

Nice!!! I am green with envy right now. Best price I can find locally is 2.85 for beech. Good gloat.

That's ridiculous! Might as well be free wood as less than 5 cents a board foot is stupid. Someone lost their ass on that stuff.

ThatsaLottaBeech!! Very tight grain, dense and hard! Tons of plane bodies or work bench slabs. What else is beech used for?

What do you have planned for it all? Hmmm....

Brent,

You'd better keep that hid. I'm just a little to the West of you.

Seriously, nice score. Wow!

I haven't found beech for sale around here. When I became toolmaker for Williamsburg,we set up in February out in the woods, and cut 5000 bd.' for making planes and other tools. We put it up to dry in a garage attic.

Defiantly a gloat worthy gloat, hope you have fun making some stuff with it. A Few of those boards look wide too!

Great wood for a WW bench. Nice tight grain, just a tad softer than Maple and European Beech. I made the trestle base and stretchers for my ww bench from Beech.

Good for you. I love to hear stories like this. Guy needs wood, guy gets wood cheap. What a fantastic find for a great bench.
