These are definately out of my comfort zone. Started buy turning a few shallow ogee shape bowls and then using my powercrafter piercing tool to cut out the leafs. All are about 5" dia. and died with akaline dyes. Clockwise from top left, Rocky Mountain Maple, Red Maple, Sugar Maple and Vine Maple. All turned from box elder. Nothing original here but it was a step out to take a perfectly good bowl and cut it apart. All comments/critiques are welcome.

Keith, those are one of the neatest ideas I have seen in a long time!! Did you mix the colors, and would you care to share that info?

This is on my list as soon as I can get my skill level to this point. Did you happen to take a pic of the bowl before the surgery?

Keith,

Those are very cool.

I am generally a die is heresy person but with this it fits.

Great job. You say it is not original but I have not seen anything like it.

I bet they were a pain to do.

I really like those, you did a great job with both the concept and the final product. These are on my list to attempt a copy.

$900.00 !!!!! That is great.

People up there must be spending but around here the market is DEAD.

The leaves should sell well. What do you think you might ask for them?

Thanks guys for your comments. Certainly encouraging. The process for these is really quite simple and the time involved is minimal.

Step 1: Turn a shallow bowl with an ogee shape. Only need to be 3/4" to 1" tall. Turn thin 1/6" or so. Deep rounded bowl shapes don't work. I also rounded the bottoms, no foot.

Step 2: Draw a leaf of your choice on the bowl.

Step 3: Follow the lines and cut it out. I used my piercing tool with a straight bit but you could use almost anything.

Step 4: Color it with your choice of dyes. I used akaline dyes. Started with yellow then green then red.

And, the edges? Dyed, or black from cutting?

Both. A dull bit burns it. A permanent marker for touch up.
