Well, this is the second one of these. I was hoping the camera would show the purple tones in the walnut, which is very interesting, but it didn't. I need to practice my camera skills.

Very well done, Chris! :) Great job on all the detail, from the splines, placement of the "flame" on the front and down to that cool handle! :) Any more info on finish and/or how the inside is finished?

Thanks for the comments. The lid just sits on a rabbeted ledge. It is all open inside, nothing fancy. Finish is two coats of lacquer.

Nice box, Chris. I like the combination of materials and the simplicity. I seem to be able to see some purple tones in the 3rd picture or maybe it is just my rose colored glasses... An attractive box...

I too can see some purple in the third picture. Keep making those boxes.

Nice job Chris! I too like the splines and handle. How did you form the handle?

Thanks for the comments. The handle is made of two pieces. The top triangle is cut on the bandsaw, then glued to the bottom block. Then I used the spindle sander and free-handed the curves on the botton and top ends. Hope that is clear enough. Have a great day.

I too have seen walnut that has the purple tone to it. Was this walnut by chance air dried? SOme air dried walnut I acquired a while back was full of this purple of which you speak. Nice Box!

Mmmm, air-dried walnut.... Nice, Chris, but the handle is a little, uh, crooked I think. It can get slippery with glue sometimes...no problem--it happens to the best of us! ;)

I was actually given some walnut that was air dried some time ago and it had that purple hue. Very nice stuff, but very tough to find out the desert.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Christopher: Actually this is a piece of "kiln dried" Walnut. I bought a piece about 36" long and this is the second piece I have used for a box top.

Chris: I knew you would notice that, but I was hoping you wouldn't mention it. Anyway, swiveling your computer 45 deg should clear it up. :)
