My question is this,I have a chance to buy a 1.5 year old 3 hp X-5 that I now know is missing both cast iron wings and the white angle iron back rail.I think that the back rail is to support the fence as you move it ,and shouldn't be a real tough to fab myself .correct me if I'm wrong. The real problem is the cast wings.Delta lists them as unavailable and $258 each.Is there any other source for a part like that, and for alot less. This saw won't be a bargain at any price if I can't find them.
Thanx,Greg

delta is notorious for price gouging on parts. anything they made that needs parts isn't a bargain unless you have access to good used parts from anyone but delta.

Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. On the bright side, my three older delta machines don't seem to require parts often and work quite well. On the down side, most parts for them are either unavailable due to being declared obsolete or are so expensive I'd rather buy a new machine than change a pulley. Nice to see they consider a three year old TS's extension wings not worth carrying. Must be obsolete.

Good luck in your search.

You might keep your eyes open for a used saw that is in bad shape and needs some TLC. You could steal the wings and re-sell the rest of the saw for a loss, but at less than what it would have cost for new wings...

Its not Delta any more, its Dewalt/B&D and yes they do take you for a ride over the coals on anything they try and sell you. A while back they sold their entire parts inventory to a guy named John Weber who now runs Weberwoodworking.com. John sells the parts directly or sells them back to D/B&D who sells them to you. Why, cause they didnt want to have to maintain inventory on them anymore. So much for looking out for all of Delta's customers over the years.

But back to your problem. The wings off any Unisaw made since 1939 will fit your saw. You may need to clean them up, but they will fit. If the fence on your saw is a biesmeyer, that back rail does not serve any purpose except to look pretty and hold extension tables in place.

Mosey on over to OWWM.org and look in the BOYD forum. http://owwm.org/viewforum.php?f=4 Many times people will sell the wings to these saws as excess parts. Pricewise, you may pay around 75 each with shipping which is still much better than trying to get new from d/b&d. You could also try the bay, you may get lucky there. Plaza Machinery has parts available too. http://www.plazamachinery.com/ The Sawcenter has wings listed in the 90 dollar range, but I think they are from the chinese cabinet saw, not an original Uni since they corners are square and they have separate left and right sides http://www.sawcenter.com/unisawparts.htm Or you could mount a cast iron router table on one side and then make an extension table on the other out of whatever you liked.

It is not Dewalt/B&D anymore, it is Stanley Black & Decker.

+1 for adding a cast iron router table... and then a larger table on the other side. Building something equivalent to the delta extension table should be easy.. and give you a much better saw! Not having the wings might be a blessing.. particularly if you point out to the seller how much it would cost you to buy them from Delta. :)
