I finally got this one finished:) It's 28" tall 14" Dia. 1/4" wall thickness.
I started it back in January. Some of you may remember I posted a couple for pic's of the rough out turning. It started out as a log about 400 lbs.
The pic's of the finished piece a pretty poor, just a quick snap shot for now. I don't have a good place to take a photo of this large of a piece. However it does have the same High Gloss finish I've been using for most of my pieces, it just doesn't show that well in my crappy pic's.

That is very impressive, Joe. I love the form - I think you nailed it. The finish really brought out the curly figure around that eye. I keep panning back up and looking at it, and I keep thinking "Wow man!" Great job!

How well did the Robust handle it? If I am ever able to upgrade to a premium lathe, the Beauty will probably be it. I just have to win the lottery first. I guess that means I should play the lottery!

Very pretty piece. Impressive for lots of reasons not the least of which is size. It makes me tired just looking at that piece... I can't imagine turning it.

You mentioned it weighed 400 pounds in the rough... What's it weigh now?

Right at 7 lbs. That's quite a weight loss program isn't it :D

Very cool piece Joe. A classic shape and beautiful finish. And you made 393 pounds of great mulch too. Well done.

Joe, that's stunning. Great form and a beautiful finish. 400 pounds down to 7, that's a lot of turning. Excellent job.

Like Steve I thought that you & maybe Jim Becker might also remember the original post.
However I haven't seem any post from Jim for a long time now. Any Idea what happened to him??

Joe, I remember the beginning post also, it inspired me to put a big chunk on my 3520B. I have 5 or 6 big ones in the roughed out stage but nothing quite as tall as yours, but I so have access to some big chunks of hard maple, maybe I will have to give it a try! The finish on yours big vase is perfect, we can see how glossy it is, so no worries there.

Thanks for the update,

Jeff

Thanks Jeff
I did have to turn this one on my friends Robust lathe. It was to big for my Powermatic. I also did the finish turning on his Robust too. I don't have the bed extension for my lathe ( however I hope to get one some time in the future) . With the tenon, Chuck & tail center this piece was to long for my powermatic.

Joe, the end result is really beautiful!! Somehow, I just don't think my HF 34076 is up to that kind of challenge!!

A couple of people commented on the finish, and it is really nice. What is your finish schedule on a piece like this?

WOW Joe
I also remember seeing this a while back, and thinking that I would like to try a big one someday.
Thanks for the reminder and posting the finished piece.

Gorgeous piece. What technique/tools did you use for hollowing to this depth? Is the interior finished?

Tools used-- 1 1/4" dia. X 6 1/2 foot long, captured boring bar with a Rolly Munro cutter head.
Yes interior is finished with one coat varnish just to seal it.

Thanks Joe for the info. I have a similar form on the drawing board but need to upgrade my cutters to handle the depth.
