I have a spindle sander for sale in the creek classifieds and locally on craigslist
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=127284
a local guy wants to trade me his powermatic 120 planer plus $200-300 cash for it.

Just wondering if this sounds like a fair deal. Looking for any advice or info about this particular planer, what to look for when inspecting it, any known problems, Im not sure what year it is, has been painted, from the pic it looks like it used to be green. He sent me a video of it running http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeTXFpLAJnQ
are the rollers made of steel?
and this photo http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=135394&d=1261003423

any advice would be helpful

Sorry, I'm no help, I just wanted comment on how scary it is that you can lift that door and have access to the spinning blade. Yeah, I know, we have TS blades and Jointer blades in our faces all the time, but man I cringed just LOOKING at it on video.

Hope somone can help you out, Chris.

BTW, how much are you asking for the sander? That might give a better idea of what the guy is asking for the planer.

how else you gonna service/replace the blades, only dangerous if you leave it open and/or stick your hand in it.

Yes, that's a great deal for PM 100(it's not 120) those are very heavy duty planers and looks like it's in good cond. you can find more info at OWWM.com.

He seems to be getting the better end of the deal. That planer is pretty old. If you are looking to get $1200 for the spindle sander and he will give you $300 cash, that values the planer at $900. No way! I bought a brand new 20 inch, 5hp, helical head for $2200. Powermatic hasn't been green for a long time. That machine is old. No deal.

Its not a good deal because its old?

That is a great planer. I'd love to have one. I've restored two other PM machines of that vintage and they are both better made than anything made today. The tables on my jointer are massive castings, for example.

I didn't watch the video but looked at the image. I'd want to do a full teardown and restore on it. Personally I think 900-1000 is a little high but I'm kind of cheap on used equipment.

Any dust collection on that planer?

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up agreeing with most of you that the deal was more in his favor and sold the sander to a fellow creeker for $1000 cash.
Thanks again,
Chris

Now offer him $4-500 or so for the planer and restore it!
