This past summer I stopped in Bad Dog Burl on the way home from vacation and ended up with a nice wood gloat. One piece I brought was a piece of "big leaf maple" tall burl. Never turned a piece of wood like this and was a wonderful challenge.
Here’s what I ended up with – WOP and buffed finish. I decided it needed a base –so I made one from paduck, 11” tall with the base and 5” in diameter.
Thanks for looking.

Love the piece. It is VERY nice.
I am not sure about the base. For me it does not flow with the piece.
I would like to see it with out the base.

Beautiful wood and nice shape. I think I like the base but would like to see a photo with/without if possible

Roland - love the burl! Beautiful wood - great form and finish! Not 100% on the stand as it is really good looking on it's own and steals some of the attention from your burl!
No matter - very nice work! Thank you for posting!

Roland,
I'll argue with them. I love the burl....the wood....the form and finish and I like the contrast between the flowing form of the burl and stand. I also like the contrasting woods.
I like it as is!

Roland, I love everything about the form - the wood is gorgeous! On the base, I like the contrast in color and shape, but I probably would have made it a tad smaller. To me, the mass of the base is a little heavy for the form.

Thank you all for the great comments. I really feel that the base sets it off, especially when on display. But now have to agree with John that it's a tad too big.
I'm hoping for a big snow storm this weekend--- more time in the basement finishing up some old forms.

Very nice, looks great with base, bet it could hold it's own without base also;)
